Rihanna opened up to Oprah Winfrey in an upcoming interview special about the night that forever changed the course of her life.

In the interview, set to air Sunday on OWN, Rihanna addresses her feelings about the night Chris Brown assaulted her in 2009.

She said she lost her best friend that night and everything she knew switched.

She says in a clip from "Oprah's Next Chapter" that having to deal with that incident wasn’t easy for her to understand or interpret.

In the midst of the media circus and the fallout from the assault, Rihanna said Brown's emotional safety was still on her mind.

She admitted that she felt protective of Brown at the time because as angry, hurt and betrayed as she was, she felt like he made that mistake because he needed help.
